The original WHA ran seven seasons from 1972 -79 before merging with the NHL. With an NHL lockout looming, a couple of Ontario businessmen took steps to launch a new WHA set to begin in 2004 intended to fill the void expected to result from an NHL work stoppage. As the founders of OGP toyed with the idea of launching the company, they managed to get an invite to the inaugural meeting of the new league on April 27, 2003. At the meeting, the former WHA star Bobby Hull was introduced as the league’s commissioner. OGP was granted a license to become the league’s official puck supplier despite not actually existing. OGP officially began its legal existence a couple of week later and the first thing we did was issue this puck to commemorate the meeting. The WHA never really got close to launching for real and OGP appears to be the only meaningful spin-off of that failed endeavour.
