The Rockets started out as an expansion team in Tacoma WA in 1991 playing out of the Tacoma Dome. However sightlines were bad and the team did not draw well except when they played against the local rivals in Seattle. After 4 seasons, the team relocated to become the Kelowna Rockets. Kelowna had been without WHL hockey since the departure of the Kelowna Wings in 1985. The Rockets have been successful on the ice making it to the Memorial Cup tournament 5 times winning one in 2004.
